In the conclusion to this multi-part article I first review the discussions carried out around the six essential questions in psychiatric diagnosis – the position taken by Allen Frances on each question, the commentaries on the respective question along with Frances’ responses to the commentaries, and my own view of the multiple discussions. In this review I emphasize that the core question is the first – what is the nature of psychiatric illness – and that in some manner (...) all further questions follow from the first. Following this review I attempt to move the discussion forward, addressing the first question from the perspectives of natural kind analysis and complexity analysis. This reflection leads toward a view of psychiatric disorders – and future nosologies – as far more complex and uncertain than we have imagined. (shrink)

Understanding the association between autonomic nervous system [ANS] function and brain morphology across the lifespan provides important insights into neurovisceral mechanisms underlying health and disease. Resting-state ANS activity, indexed by measures of heart rate [HR] and its variability [HRV] has been associated with brain morphology, particularly cortical thickness [CT]. While findings have been mixed regarding the anatomical distribution and direction of the associations, these inconsistencies may be due to sex and age differences in HR/HRV and CT. Previous studies have been (...) limited by small sample sizes, which impede the assessment of sex differences and aging effects on the association between ANS function and CT. To overcome these limitations, 20 groups worldwide contributed data collected under similar protocols of CT assessment and HR/HRV recording to be pooled in a mega-analysis (N = 1,218 (50.5% female), mean age 36.7 years (range: 12-87)). Findings suggest a decline in HRV as well as CT with increasing age. CT, particularly in the orbitofrontal cortex, explained additional variance in HRV, beyond the effects of aging. This pattern of results may suggest that the decline in HRV with increasing age is related to a decline in orbitofrontal CT. These effects were independent of sex and specific to HRV; with no significant association between CT and HR. Greater CT across the adult lifespan may be vital for the maintenance of healthy cardiac regulation via the ANS-or greater cardiac vagal activity as indirectly reflected in HRV may slow brain atrophy. Findings reveal an important association between CT and cardiac parasympathetic activity with implications for healthy aging and longevity that should be studied further in longitudinal research. The six questions involve: 1) the nature of a mental disorder; 2) the definition of mental disorder; 3) the issue of whether, in the current state of psychiatric science, DSM-5 should assume a cautious, conservative posture or an assertive, transformative posture; 4) the role (...) of pragmatic considerations in the construction of DSM-5; 5) the issue of utility of the DSM - whether DSM-III and IV have been designed more for clinicians or researchers, and how this conflict should be dealt with in the new manual; and 6) the possibility and advisability, given all the problems with DSM-III and IV, of designing a different diagnostic system. Part I of this article will take up the first two questions. With the first question, invited commentators express a range of opinion regarding the nature of psychiatric disorders, loosely divided into a realist position that the diagnostic categories represent real diseases that we can accurately name and know with our perceptual abilities, a middle, nominalist position that psychiatric disorders do exist in the real world but that our diagnostic categories are constructs that may or may not accurately represent the disorders out there, and finally a purely constructivist position that the diagnostic categories are simply constructs with no evidence of psychiatric disorders in the real world. The second question again offers a range of opinion as to how we should define a mental or psychiatric disorder, including the possibility that we should not try to formulate a definition. And then there is stone. Rocky mantle and lithic crust form the single most taken-for-granted life assumption on which we—literally!—stand. Here as well my Ireland explorations provoke with question and mystery. What became a tour and counsel of cairns and dolmens on a visit in the fall of 2023 will set the tone with a witness to myth and wisdom, 6000 years old (And give rise to the choice of book cover—a dolmen in the megalithic site of Carrowmore in County (...) Sligo, Ireland, foregrounding the 1073-foot high Atlantic coast “mountain” of Knocknerea, topped by a 180-foot in diameter, 33-foot high cairn-tomb known as Maeve’s Heap (Miosgán Meadhbh), a renowned/feared Goddess-Queen of Gaelic myth, that was among the ancestral places I visited with my wife in that fall 2023 pilgrimage.). And then a turn to a biblical tradition that likewise has much to teach—as well as learn—if approached with an indigenously-informed sensibility and concern for “reading.” Indeed, even merely scratching the surface of such a focus demands at least book-length treatment (that the author hopes to tackle soon enough). After all, the very first “christ”—or “anointed one”—in the entire biblical corpus is a stone granting Jacob his first intimations of a Heaven-Earth reciprocation, “spiritized” in his dream-world as “angelic,” and leading him to set the shard upright, pour oil, and announce the “place” Dread-Haunted and the rock a “House of God” betyl (Beth-El). And from there the topic literally ranges seismic and “mountainous.” But in Chap. 7 the exploration can only hint. Centering the inquiry is the writing called Little Saint by American writer Hannah Green, detailing the post-humous career of third century martyr, Saint Foy, whose remains, “spirited” around the mountains of southern France in avoidance of further persecution and later Muslim incursion, end up at a church in the village of Conques, settled over a phonolite rock anchoring the ecclesial practice in much older Celtic inspiration, in terrain populated by menhirs anciently erected to aid in mapping, on earth, the stellar arch of the Milky Way, directing ancestral souls as well as living pilgrims, west towards the ocean and afterlife. Such a layering—Christian on “pagan”—is merely a surface iteration of a geologic depth-phenomenon, in which the history of the planet is etched in an ever-evolving lithospheric palimpsest, for a temporal duration of eons (but not forever). Thus stone—giving testament (to Cailleach) and offering vision (to Jacob). Then granting hearing in a phonolite slab echoing, among other things, Gregorian chant as well as its own resonant vibration determined by its own history of travel, pressure, heat, water, etc. Anciently guiding walking by “earthing” constellations as a kind of map. And finally serving as writing in the longest standing journal the planet ever records. Stone as the first “offspring”—the first “throw off”—of the iron core womb of Earth, but “elder” to all dwellers on soil, in water, cruising air. If we do not understand the spirit—and spirituality—of such, from an ancient Christian point of view we are docetically heretic: our feet do not touch the ground! (shrink)

The book examines the principal philosophies of music put forward during the period extending, roughly, from Descartes through Rameau. In musical chronology, that would include the late Renaissance and most of the Baroque, hence “l’âge classique” makes reference to a cultural epoch, centered principally in France, and not the period in musical history known as “classical.” Composers whose works receive mention include Monteverdi, Lully, and of course Rameau. However, this is a book about theorists, not musicians.

There were over nineteen hundred contributors to the mathematical department of the Educational Times during its sixty-seven-year existence. The monthly column contained problems and their solutions, brief articles, and often short accounts of the most recent meeting of the London Mathematical Society. Hugh MacColl (1837-1909), a teacher and tutor, was one of the more prolific contributors to the department. He submitted his contributions from Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. His expertise was mainly in geometric probability, standard probability, and logic. After a brief history (...) of the mathematical department of the Educational Times and some of Carroll’s correspondence with the editor, W. J. C. William James's famous book, The Varieties of Religious Experience , appeared in 1902. Ever since that date studies of the psychology of mysticism have poured from the press. In our own country we may name Evelyn Underhill, Mrs. Herman, and von Hügel. In France, Bastide, Murisier, Récéjac, Boutroux, Delacroix, Janet, Poulain, Bremond, Bergson, Bréhier. In America, besides William James, Starbuck, Leuba, Coe, Hocking, Rufus Jones, P. E. More, Pratt, Royce, Bennett. These lists are far from complete. In Germany (...) the subject seems to have aroused less interest; but Otto, not long before his death, published a book dealing with it. (shrink)

When managers use moral expressions in their communications, they do so for several, sometimes contradictory reasons. Based upon analyses of interviews with managers, this article examines seven distinctive uses of moral talk, sub-divided into three groupings: (1) managers use moral talk functionally to clarify issues, to propose and criticize moral justifications, and to cite relevant norms; (2) managers also use moral talk functionally to praise and to blame as well as to defend and criticize structures of authority; finally (3) managers (...) use moral talk dysfunctionally to rationalize morally ambiguous behavior and to express frustrations. The generation of asymmetric cell shapes is a recurring theme in biology. In budding yeast, one form of cell asymmetry occurs for division and is generated by anisotropic growth of the mother cell to form a daughter cell bud. With this work, the author terminates his trilogy on nationally prominent philosophers in Germany, France, and the United States, respectively. In all three works a deliberate attempt is made to counter the current trend towards linguistic analysis and deal with philosophy in its classical meaning as a body of general truths about the universe as a whole, which the author believes leads to some important consequences of present day relevance. The style of the work, to say the least, is unusual (...) in that it is cast in the form of a series of letters, fourteen in number, of a father to his daughter. Since he admits there are no German, French, or American "philosophies," properly speaking, each letter deals with a particular North American philosopher, beginning with Jonathan Edwards, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine in Revolutionary days, continuing with Ralph Waldo Emerson, William James, Charles Sanders Peirce, Josiah Royce, John Dewey, and George Herbert Mead as 19th century representatives, and Whitehead, Santayana, and Carnap for the first half of the twentieth. The work concludes with Hans Kelsen and Marcuse, who like Carnap, came to the United States as the result of Hitler’s antisemitism. The tenor of the work lays stress on problems of cultural and political life and, thereby, on the ties of this sort that bind the United States and Europe. The work reads well, and although its tone is more biographical than philosophical, more expository than critical, it could well serve as supplementary reading for a seminar on American philosophy.—A.B.W. In their important paper “Autonomous Agents”, Floridi and Sanders use “levels of abstraction” to argue that computers are or may soon be moral agents. In this paper we use the same levels of abstraction to illuminate differences between human moral agents and computers. In their paper, Floridi and Sanders contributed definitions of autonomy, moral accountability and responsibility, but they have not explored deeply some essential questions that need to be answered by computer scientists who design artificial agents. One such question (...) is, “Can an artificial agent that changes its own programming become so autonomous that the original designer is no longer responsible for the behavior of the artificial agent?” To explore this question, we distinguish between LoA1 (the user view) and LoA2 (the designer view) by exploring the concepts of unmodifiable, modifiable and fully modifiable tables that control artificial agents. We demonstrate that an agent with an unmodifiable table, when viewed at LoA2, distinguishes an artificial agent from a human one. This distinction supports our first counter-claim to Floridi and Sanders, namely, that such an agent is not a moral agent, and the designer bears full responsibility for its behavior. We also demonstrate that even if there is an artificial agent with a fully modifiable table capable of learning* and intentionality* that meets the conditions set by Floridi and Sanders for ascribing moral agency to an artificial agent, the designer retains strong moral responsibility. As software developers design artificial agents , they often have to wrestle with complex issues, issues that have philosophical and ethical importance. This paper addresses two key questions at the intersection of philosophy and technology: What is deception? And when is it permissible for the developer of a computer artifact to be deceptive in the artifact’s development? While exploring these questions from the perspective of a software developer, we examine the relationship of deception and trust. Are developers using deception to (...) gain our trust? Is trust generated through technological “enchantment” warranted? Next, we investigate more complex questions of how deception that involves AAs differs from deception that only involves humans. Finally, we analyze the role and responsibility of developers in trust situations that involve both humans and AAs. (shrink)

This paper examines the journals of Frances W. Willard, founder and organ izer of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in the United States, and their revelations about the gender battle that raged within the psyche of Willard and other young women of her day. The failure of organized Chris tianity to provide solace or unbiased counsel to women such as Willard is apparent in a close reading of Willard's work. Within the pages of her journals, the struggle she faced (...) is obvious on almost every page; her strug gle with what society said she should do, and what she knew she was capable of doing, is present for all to see. The paper argues that because, however, lived in the United States within a short window of nineteenth- century time, she was able to form a 'Boston Marriage' with a young woman who provided her with the comfort and support she needed. The Boston Marriage, arguably, was available only for relatively well-to-do, white-middle-class women of an educated class, who had attended col lege and, because they were able to find a 'service' career of some kind, could live together in harmony. Enlightened families, like that of Henry James, were able to support female members of their class who did not 'fit in' to societal norms of the day and accept their lifestyle, while negat ing the sexuality of it. Organized religion, however, did not, and it is the failure of her church to help her find a way of life she can tolerate about which Willard writes. You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (shrink)

We hypothesize that aspects of animal multicellularity originated before the divergence of metazoans from fungi and social amoebae. Polarized epithelial tissues are a defining feature of metazoans and contribute to the diversity of animal body plans. The recent finding of a polarized epithelium in the non‐metazoan social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum demonstrates that epithelial tissue is not a unique feature of metazoans, and challenges the traditional paradigm that multicellularity evolved independently in social amoebae and metazoans. An alternative view, presented here, is (...) that the common ancestor of social amoebae, fungi, and animals spent a portion of its life cycle in a multicellular state and possessed molecular machinery necessary for forming an epithelial tissue. Some descendants of this ancestor retained multicellularity, while others reverted to unicellularity. The authors discuss some of the conceptual issues that must be considered in using and understanding psychiatric classification. DSM-IV is a practical and common sense nosology of psychiatric disorders that is intended to improve communication in clinical practice and in research studies. DSM-IV has no philosophic pretensions but does raise many philosphical questions. This paper describes the development of DSM-IV and the way in which it addresses a number of philosophic issues: nominalism vs. realism, epistemology in science, the mind/body dichotomy, (...) the definition of mental disorders, and dimensional vs. categorical classification. Instead of a scholarly paper, we decided to write a brief, personal remembrance of our friend and colleague Jim Moor. We briefly touch on his personal kindnesses to us, his significant influence on legitimizing computer ethics as an object of study, and why we think Jim was so effective in reaching scholars across disciplinary divides.

In the middle years of the nineteenth century, work on utilitarian ethics largely abated while there was a revitalization of interest in intuitionism, with several new systems appearing which developed the outlook in greater detail and sophistication than had ever been done before. This chapter looks at a number of these intuitionist philosophies, focussing on William Whewell, James Martineau, Frances Cobbe, and John Grote. This fills in a gap in existing historical scholarship, and demonstrates the falsity of complaints (...) by its utilitarian critics that it was a simplistic and uniform doctrine. As this chapter shows, intuitionism came in several different forms and was often highly sophisticated in its formulation. (shrink)
